2019’s Cheapest Summer Family Events in Kansas City

It’s almost summer break in Kansas City! For kids, this magical time of year means zero homework and zero alarm clocks. For parents, it means paying a babysitter and finding an engaging activity to keep the kids’ boredom at bay.

Since you’re already forking over big bucks for a day camp or sitter, why spend more for those activities? Here are some free and cheap summer events in Kansas City that will fill up your family’s calendar.

Solar Telescopes for the Summer Solstice (FREE)

June 21 at 6:30 PM, Stagecoach Park (Olathe, KS)

End the longest day of the year with a view of the sunset-lit sky at Stagecoach Park. Experts from Kansas City’s Astronomical Society will be on hand to educate and show families just how brilliant our world can be. Oh, and attendants may also receive some “fun in the sun” freebies! Make Music Liberty 2019 (FREE)

June 21-22, Throughout Liberty, MO

Open to all ages, this free June event in Liberty allows everyone to, well, make music! Skill level and musical genres don’t matter – all participants need is some courage. KC Roller Warriors: Roller Derby Bouts ($5+)

June 22 at 5 PM, Memorial Hall (Kansas City, KS)

Kick off your summer fun by watching the hard-hitting Kansas City Roller Warriors duke it out in the rink. Who knows – maybe your kids will want to become a Junior Roller Warrior and, ultimately, the coolest kid in school. Buy tickets online through www.kcrollerwarriors.com.


June 28 at 5:300 PM, Stump Park (Shawnee, KS)

Enjoy an evening at Shawnee’s Stump Park, where the sprinklers will be flowing and the music will be live. Take your lawn chairs to get the best view of the concluding spectacle: fireworks! Wyandotte County Fair ($5+)

July 9-13, Wyandotte County Fairgrounds (Kansas City, KS)

Pay just $5 per car to gain entry to this locally adored Kansas City fair. Events are still being finalized, but you can expect 4-H exhibits, carnival rides, pig races, a petting zoo, camel rides, stage performances, go-kart races, and tons more. Sesame Street Road Trip (FREE)

July 13 at 10 AM, Frank A. Theis Park (Kansas City, MO)

Big Bird, Elmo, and the whole Sesame Street gang will be visiting Kansas City on Saturday, July 13, to celebrate 50 years of being the best dang children’s show on TV. The family festival will offer interactive shows, live stage performances, a fun maze, treasure hunts, raffles, and cookies with milk – just what the doctor ordered. Hunt for Berry Treasure (FREE w/ admission)

July 13 at 10:30 AM, Powell Gardens (Kingsville, MO)

Take the kids for a short hike through the Powell Gardens forest to find wild blackberries and other hidden riches. The hike ends at the gorgeous lotus pond, so be sure to have your camera ready. This kid-friendly event is free for members or with admission to Kansas City’s Botanical Garden. Registration is required, to submit your information ASAP!

The Great Car Show ($2+)

July 21 at 10 AM, National WWI Museum and Memorial (Kansas City, MO)

Now we’re cookin’! One of our favorite summer events in Kansas City is The Great Car Show. Judges will be scoring the country’s finest, most innovative, and rarest vehicles you’ll ever see. Everything from hot rods to classic ‘Vettes to custom trucks will be on display. Don’t miss out on one of the best car shows in Missouri. Fun in the Sun Kids Fest (FREE)

July 27 at 9 AM, Linden Square (Gladstone, MO)

Children of all ages can create balloon art, ride inflatable water slides, jam to some music, and get their faces painted at the Fun in the Sun Kids Fest. One of the most anticipated Gladstone summer events, Fun in the Sun is also home to the Cutie Pie Tri, a triathlon for kids. Receive more details at lindensquare.info.

Missouri State Fair (FREE to $10)

August 8-18, State Fairgrounds (Sedalia, MO)

There’s this tiny event happening right by our sister dealership, McCarthy Toyota of Sedalia. Something called the Missouri State Fair? Among the kid-friendly events at this unknown Sedalia event is a singing competition, blacksmithing shows, truck and tractor pulls, eating competitions, and a live performance from some band called Journey. Tails on the Trails Festival & Dog Swim (FREE to $8)

August 10 at 9 AM, Ad Astra Pool and Park (Lenexa, KS)

This Lenexa event is for the whole family, furry four-legged pals included. Pet vendors will be selling their goods and there’s even a pet talent show on the calendar. Attending the Tails on Trails Festival is free, though you’ll need to pay up to $8 for your dog to swim in the pool. Visit the Lenexa site for event details and to pre-register your pooch.

Touch-a-Truck 2019 (FREE)

August 11 at 11 AM, Overland Park Convention Center (Overland Park, KS)

More than 40 gigantic trucks will be on display inside the Overland Park Convention Center. Kids can play around (responsibly, of course) on fire trucks, military vehicles, custom trucks, farming equipment and more. They can also burn off some of that energy in the bounce houses. This Overland Park summer event is free with a donation. Check the OPCC website for donation requirements and other event information.
